Yeti Tundra Cooler Review

Having a quality cooler with you while camping opens up a world of possibilities you can’t enjoy without one. Think about popping open a cold beer or ice cold water after a long hike, bringing fresh meat for the barbecue, or cooking up something special like some seafood. Sound great right?yeti tundra

This is I’m bringing you a review of the Yeti Tundra 45. If you don’t currently own a cooler, or you’re looking for a new one, this is about as good as it gets. So let’s take a closer look at some of the specifics, I’m sure you’ll find yourself being tempted.

Setup and Design Features

Yeti manufacture a range of coolers and the Tundra Cooler is one of their bestselling models. It’s one of their more portable models, so it’s ideal for smaller groups or campers who just need a few items kept cool. It’s capacity is 45Q of ice, also translated as 20 normal size cans, so it has some decent storage space and capability.

It’s constructed from extra-thick walls made from UV-resistant polyethylene, this is a cold-retaining construction that ensures you’re food are going to stay cool longer. The lid fits very snug, and when put to the test the insulation on the Tundra is one of the best on the market. One test saw some ice last for around 10 days when locked in, which is pretty incredible when you think about it.

The outside of the Tundra is strong, smooth plastic. It’s designed to take a beating and not show it. While using this box through all the normal wear and tear of a cooler it simply will not break. Such as transporting in a car, carrying, dropping at camp sites, using to place things on top, etc. In my opinion the durability doesn’t need to be a concern.

The lid opens on a hinge to stand vertically and holds in position while you are loading and unloading. The latch keeping the lid closed is hard rubber and attaches securely to the main body of the box. The bottom of the box also has some rubber fixings for feet so it will not slip.

When it comes to emptying the cooler, the Tundra has a screw plug in the corner to drain water. Its nice little touches like this that separates this product from some of the run-of-the-mill offerings on the market. yetiIt also has a ‘no sweat’ design, so the outside keeps dry while the inside is wet.

An area of concern is always the handles on coolers, as anyone who has owned one of the less expensive models will know all too well. Again, this has been covered by Yeti.

The handles on the Tundra are military-grade nylon rope with textured hand grips. Sounds a little too secure? Sounds just fine to me, knowing the handles are never going to let me down is fine with me.

Coolers are known to be heavy, but at 19 lbs you’re not going to break your back with this one. Even fully laden it’s going to be manageable between two people, or for anyone with decent strength. So load it up, strap it in the car, and head off on your next camping trip with the peace of mind that you’re perishables will be as fresh as the moment they left your fridge or freezer.

Pros

  • Constructed from Rotomolded plastic making it incredibly strong
  • Extra-thick walls for maximum insulation
  • Great value for money
  • Heavy duty handles that will not let you down
  • Comes with one dry goods basket

Cons

  • As a portable model it will not be big enough for everyone

Insider Tips

When picking up a cooler box I recommend throwing some freeze ice sheets in the basket too. yeti tundra 45Flexi sheets can be cut to your desired size and are flexible when frozen. So you can bend them round your items you’re keeping cold in your cooler.

They make for an economical and convenient alternative to bags of ice, I recommend you take a look at theses if you’ve never used them before.

Yeti Tundra Cooler Summary

You’ve probably noticed throughout this review that I have been pretty impressed. It’s not that I get impressed by coolers, more so that I love seeing a wonderfully designed product that actually works – and the Tundra works very well.

It will keep your food and drinks cool, there is no doubting that. It’s built to last, and is very robust. If you haven’t used a cooler before you’re only dilemmas are going to be what to take with all the new options available.

As far as value for money goes, you can look at this product as paying for itself over time. With all the food and drink lasting longer, and the fact that this box will be with you for years, its money well spent to say the least.

Conclusion

The Yeti Tundra is one of the best examples of a cool box on the market. If you’ve been let down before by substandard coolers, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. Click the link below and take a closer look and browse some of the user feedback, it doesn’t get much better than this.
