Stansport Outfitter Series 2 Burner Stove Review

The Stansport Outfitter Series is one of the best 2 Burner table top stoves on the market.  The Outfitter pumps out 25,000 BTU’s per burner which was the highest output for any of the table top 2 burner stoves we reviewed.  The simplicity, power and compact nature of the Outfitter Series are key bonus features.  Just set it on the table, screw in your propane tank, open the lid and use the Piezo ingnitor to fire it up.

Setup and Design Features

Camp Chef Everest 2 Burner StoveKey features include a windscreen for each burner, heavy duty cooking grate, high altitude pressure regulator, and stainless-steel drip pan.  Although the Stansport Outfitter 2 Burner Stove didn’t make the #1 spot this year, it had many similar features to the #1 recommended Camp Chef Everest model.   The Outfitter dimensions are 6”H x 13.5”W x 24”L and weighs 13 lbs.  It was a little heavier than most of the other two-burner stoves that were reviewed.  It was similar in weight to the Primus Firehole 100.

Similar to the other 2-Burner stoves in this class, it burns Propane fuel.  This is the preferred fuel type because most of these stoves will be used in the less extreme environments.  Propane doesn’t always provide a very efficient flame in very cold weather.  The outfitter is an exception to this rule because of  the pressure regulator feature and does well in colder environments.

Comparison Information

The Stansport Outfitter was our #2 rated stove in the 2-Burner Stove class.  This stove kicks out more BTU’s than the others and has really good burner control valves.  Some of the stoves reviewed had issues with temperature controls when using both burners.  Some burner output on the second burner was reduced while using both burners in other models.  You can see from the video below that there was no reduction in power with the second burner.

It boils a liter of water in under 5 minutes and requires very little maintenance because of its durable overall construction.  It’s a good idea to clean the stove once a year and maybe more depending on the amount of trips you are doing per year.   You may want to bring along a large 5 gallon propane tank for your next trip.  The little green canisters might not make it through a full trip.  Take a look at this link if you need additional camping cooking gear information.

The pros for the Stansport Outfitter are numerous and outweigh the cons to make this one of the top 2-Burner Stoves.  Power and design are usually the first details mentioned for this stove, but the larger size and burner control are also key features.  For additional features or information from the manufacturer take a look at Stansport’s website.

The Outfitter has an auto ignition and has very good wind protection because of the individual windscreens on each burner.  When I first unpacked the stove I noticed that the sticker to the heat control knob was partly unglued.  Upon using it on a very cold camping trip, I had no additional problem with the control knob sticker.  The heat regulation feature provides the flexibility to boil rapidly or simmer at very low output levels. Price ranges from $65 to $120.

The Pros:

  • Good simmer control
  • Lots of room for larger pansStansport Outfitter Series Camping Stove
  • Less $ than Everest for similar stove
  • Windscreens on each burner
  • Boils water rapidly

The Cons:

  • Windscreens are not adjustable
  • Lid is prone to denting
  • No dedicated propane connection area
  • Control valve sticker was partially unglued

Insider Tips:

The rounded edges and clean tray design will help with cleanup and to avoid accidental scrapes. This stove works great in cold weather and high altitudes because of the burner design and wind protection wings.

The outfitter doesn’t come with a dedicated slot to hold the propane adapter.  Try using an empty coffee bag to wrap the adapter in and store under the cooking grate.  The Outfitter does not come with a stove bag but there are other home items that you can use such as a light duffle bag.  The bag isn’t a requirement if you are careful with packing and unpacking your stove.

I just got back from a camping trip with super high winds and wanted to show you how well the Outfitter performed in 50 MPH gusts.  Take a look at this link for a quick video and quick laugh.

Stansport Outfitter Summary:

The Stansport kicks out 50,000 BTU’s, has plenty of strength in the grate and plenty of room for cooking. You will be able to use this model in a number of different climates, elevations and camping conditions.  I love the simmer control and quick boiling ability of this table top model.  You get the power of the higher end stoves at a lower price with this stove.

At 13 lbs you get a lighter stove than some of the other higher end stand alone stoves, but with comparable power.  This table top version of the more powerful stand alone stoves provides more flexibility in camping.  Setup and take down is super easy with this model as well.

Conclusion:

After all of the features are added together it was decided that this stove deserved a # 2 rating this year for best 2-Burner Stove.  The Stansport Outfitter Stove is the best choice if you want a high quality, high output stove at a very competitive price.
